Diagnostic Features

Obverse: Shallow top serif on digit 1; second 8 is 100% below curl.
Reverse: Middle arrow shaft unbroken at first talon; 5 is 20% under arrow feather; D is 100% under branch.

The prooflike specimen sold in the Pogue sale (Stacks-Bowers, 2016, Pogue IV, lot #4057; the Parmelee-Byron Reed-Bass-Pogue specimen) is this variety. The Smithsonian collection specimen is also this variety and looks to be prooflike. No proof classic half eagles from 1838 have been certified.
